Yesterday I got to bring my students to the Toy Film Museum, and it was really a huge treat to share the experience with them. They got to experiment hands-on with a number of early film, photography, and animation technologies, as well as to benefit from the knowledge of director Ota Yoneo and curator Ota Fumiyo.<\/div><\/div>
I really was happy to pass on the message of what we risk missing or losing when we fail to engage with the materiality of cinema. Even I am young enough to need this message.<\/div><\/div>

Thank you so much for taking the AKP students to the museum yesterday. We were deeply touched by their comments in the guestbook. It is very encouraging to know that they found this experience both fascinating and educational.
Coincidentally, today (January 31st) is the day that \"Japanese Paper Film,\" a project we collaborated on, will be screened at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) with live music. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Professor Eric Faden and his team at Bucknell University. Thanks to their efforts in developing a device to safely digitize these precious materials, \"paper film\" (a uniquely Japanese medium patented in 1932 but banned in 1938 due to the war) has been exhibited in Italy, Australia, and now throughout the United States.
Yesterday, the students also viewed \"omocha-e\" (multicolored woodblock prints) from the Edo and Meiji periods. Professor Anne Herring, also from the United States, became fascinated with paper toys, which were commonplace but often discarded after use, and tirelessly began collecting them.
We also introduced the students to Nishiki Kage-e, a uniquely Japanese form of shadow puppetry that originated during the Edo period. I believe that the roots of Japan's world-renowned animation lie in Nishiki Kage-e, which uses a wooden device called a \"furo.\" People would gather after dark to enjoy stories told alongside narration and music, with images of seedwood projected through a magic lantern. This art form fell into decline with the advent of film, but there are still people today who are dedicated to preserving this tradition. Professors Faden and Herring are among those captivated by its charm.
It is often the eyes of people overseas that first recognize the value of Japan's ancient culture, preserve it, and teach us Japanese its true meaning. I believe our museum's mission is to serve as a bridge between countries, promoting international exchange and ensuring that each country's precious culture is passed on to future generations.

On Saturday, January 31st, a screening of Japanese Paper Films (@kamifirumu) was held at MoMA The Museum of Modern Art<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span> of its annual To Save and Project Festival. The event was co-organized by MoMA and New York University\u2019s Orphan Film Symposium. In addition to the paper films (which consisted almost half of the program), five other presenters screened rare films that were recently discovered or preserved.<\/div><\/div>
Fortunately, we had a sold-out crowd that came to the event despite the freezing weather and gave enthusiastic response to the films. The energy of the room was palpable, and we had a great time performing.<\/div><\/div>
This was a special event because the first public screening of the newly digitalized paper films was at the Orphan Film Symposium held on April 11, 2024 at the Museum of Moving Image in New York. In fact, a few Japanese film aficionados had been preserving the films even before the Japanese Paper Film Project began, but Prof. Eric Faden and his team came up with a system to reliably and quickly digitalize and stabilize the images without damaging the original print. We must also recognized and thank the efforts of the collectors who had the foresight of preserving these culturally significant artifacts even if they had no way of watching them.<\/div><\/div>
It\u2019s quite amazing to think that the films that were made for children in the 1930s have resurrected and are being showed to 21st century audience. As musicians, it's a gratifying process to add life to the films and to feel the joy of the audience in real time.<\/div><\/div>

The visit to the ToyFilm museum in Kyoto last week was fantastic, especially as the people who run it -- the Ota family -- are so dedicated and knowledgeable. I could tell they are well connected within the global networks of early cinema buffs, as all around us we had various items referencing Pordenone or nitrate film. I particularly liked what I learned about Japanese paper films, an area on which I knew next to nothing.<\/div><\/div>
I benefited from having come to see it on the day when Justine Wiesinger<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span> brought her students from Bates College. Her interpretation allowed me to grasp many aspects of the detailed commentary provided by Fumiyo Ota that would have escaped me otherwise. So grateful.<\/div><\/div>
I never expect to fully understand the situation with Japan's film heritage, even if I know a thing of two about this. It seems it is mainly left to private enthusiasts, like the people at the Planetary Film Archive in Kobe, or the Toyfilm museum people in Kyoto*, or the Kawakita foundation in Tokyo, etc - and they of course all have different levels of funding and (I speculate) different priorities. I am sure there is much more, and I see older Japanese films being shown at various places -- like the nearby Museum of Kyoto, a state-sponsored institution, which always runs some archival series. In any case, the short films -- feature and animation from the first half of the XX century -- we saw at the Toyfilm Museum, were fun. Bits of 35mm tape -- perhaps even from lost films -- have survived for being played at the home machines of film enthusiasts. Cute.<\/div><\/div>
